Well my Litter box is downstairs when she is down there she uses it but when we take her upstairs she pees and poops on the floor on the same corner of the wall, how can I teach her to go downstairs when she needs to go?

When you say ´we take her upstairs´ do you really mean taking her? Do you lift her up and take her upstairs? Maybe she doesn´t know how to get downstairs?

I think the best thing you can do is buy a second litter box and but that one upstairs. When she´s learned to use the one downstairs in the future you can remove the one upstairs (if you don´t want one there). Ohterwise you can let her use both.

good luck!

Hi there, Sannie is right. Maddy is very young. It´s possible she just can´t hold it long enough to get to her downstairs box. Clean the floor well where´s she´s been going (use an enzyme cleanser from a petstore if it´s carpeting) then put a second box upstairs for her in the same place. As she gets older you can probably move it closer to the door/stairs then eliminate it altogether.

Hi Sami, I agree with Sannie she definately needs another litter tray upstairs, also place a food bowl down (with a small amount of dried food in it) over the places where she goes unappropriately. Bi card soda is also good to remove any odours!
Good Luck!

Vinegar is also a good way to remove the smell of urine if yoiu don´t have the store bought remedys. I used Urine Erase which I found worked well. Good luck and do place anohter litter box in the area she has been previously wanting to use.

I´m sorry, but I keep getting this picture in my mind of this kitten trying to run downstairs with her back legs crossed! LOL!

Kittens seem to master crawling up stairs a lot faster than they master going down stairs - I think they´re afraid they´ll fall. So I agree that a big part of Maddy´s problem is that she either doesn´t know how to climb down stairs, or she´s still a little afraid of climbing down stairs. Two litter boxes should solve the problem for now - and the box upstairs doesn´t have to be a big fancy box - you can use an aluminum pie tin with litter in it. Once Maddy realizes that peeing and pooping in litter is the only place she should pee and poop, and once she´s old enough to handle the stairs, this problem should go away.

After all, she´s only a little older than one month - that´s still extremely young. Most kittens are still with their Moms at that age, and the cat Mom teaches them a lot of this stuff. So now, you have to be her cat Mom, and realize Mandy needs teaching of all these things - make it easy for her to learn, and don´t punish her for inappropriate peeing and pooping. She´s too young to understand punishment and might think you´re telling her she shouldn´t pee or poop at all.

well, always scold her while you show her where she peed..bring her face realy close,so she can understand why you are mad.

oh!!! and the pet shops have non-odor spray.to put where she "made it" andshe can only smell the spray, humans can´t.it smells bad to her and she will never go to that place again...

Like everyone said, clean that upstairs area with an enzyme cleaner found at pet stores, then put a litterbox in that same spot. She is too young to get downstairs to her other litterbox in time. Remember, not only is she still learning to navigate the stairs, but also her bladder and bowels are not as developed and big as an adult´s, and can´t hold as long (just like with human children). She´s also still learning that the box is ONLY where she is supposed to go. You´re the mom now, try to keep an eye out and if you see her about to go in an inappropraite place show her the correct place to go.

I´m afraid that scolding cats never works. She´ll never understand why you´re angry, and putting her face close to her accident won´t teach her anything except that you´re angry, you´re hurting her, and it has something to do with peeing. She won´t know why though - she just knows she had to pee so she did and now you´re frightening her. It will likely increase her anxiety about peeing and she´ll make more mistakes. Training a cat to do the right thing is always better done using positive reinforcement. Make it easy for her to do the right thing (by adding another box) and reward her for doing it. Trying to punish a cat usually has a tendency to seriously backfire.

I am sure that the writer of the above post had good intentions when they posted it but as MichyD has said, cats do not understand scolding and it could worsen the situation. MichyD´s advice is great!!!!

Thanks for the advice guys...but she is starting to understand that she should only pee and poop downstairs. she has made a few mistakes but she is getting there

A small tip I have used that works quite well is bio washing power or liquid for clothes . Built in enzyeme busters.

Sami, she´ll understand eventually. As I said, she´s very young - but cats learn quickly, and since they´re naturally fastidious about pooping and peeing, she´ll want to use the litter box. She just needs to be old enough to learn how to "hold it" until she gets to the box. It´s good to hear that she´s getting the idea!

18.April 2008 18:41

Yeah..she runs really fast up and down the stairs now but she only goes downstairs when we go she likes to follow us around. She hates being alone

20.April 2008 09:28

Of course she hates being alone! First, she´s a kitten, and not at all used to being by herself, and she sees you as her Mom! Second, she loves you, so of course she wants to be with you. Plus, she may still be apprehensive about going down stairs, so she feels more confident if she has her Mom with her when she does it.

Totally agree!
I have looked after many a kitten.
Aside from the fact that the weenie wants to be with you. The world is a BIG place if you get down to their level, downstairs is too far to go on your own.
She wants & needs company right now. So a tray for up & down is best while so little.
When she gets bigger, she´ll catch on with the amount of praise you will be giving her while she is going to the downstairs tray.

I completely agree with the second litter box idea until she has gotten older and I don´t feel scolding such a young cat, necessary....it is just a matter of maturity.........every adult cat gets used to the place you put the box just by taking them into the room and gently depositing said cat in the box, turning your back and walking away. Mature cats remember this spot....kittens just need a little more learning and, and in your kitten´s case, climbing time....ha!......and in their exhuberance, the 2nd box would make sense for the temporary......the vineager mixed with water works but the enzyme stuff, I like better....better odor. ......and, she needs lots of interaction with you.......just like a baby trying to please Mommy......and believe me, I know how frustrating it is to have a cat ´miss the litter box either intentionally or accidentally, kitten or adult cat.....oh, the stories I could tell.....ha!

20.April 2008 21:18

hahah thanks songbird..I would love to hear some stories

Here is a quickie....ha!.....Babysat my brother´s cat.....call it ´age,´ call it being a ´brat,´ but place rear in position but oh, just so close to the edge with paws precarilously balanced on the edge and in the sand, and with a little sway, let it fly beyond the edge of the box.....whalla!!!!......mission accomplished.

Now, this was not a just once in awhile happening but this cat did this always (it was a cat that my brother adopted after the man next door died....that man never kept it in the house and it was fairly old when my brother adopted it).......so, my brother just cut the carpet up around the box (it was in a basement recreation room that they used for storage) and now, I, as the babysitter got to clean up after his majesty, time and time again.......ah, the joy of that cat.....not!!!....hmmmmm, at least the litter was clean.........ha!......and yet, I must confess, I loved the little character....He was a sweet cat although sadly, a bit too easily frightend by newcomers (other than me).....count your blessings you have a kitten who if loved and coaxed, it will not come up with such a crazy habit.....ha!

I hear apple cider vinegar works really well for odor, epecially for those with sensitive noses
